Thyroid dysfunction has become one of the most common health conditions facing Americans today, especially in the female population. The diagnosis of an under or overactive thyroid is often based on one marker in the blood, called thyroid stimulating hormone or TSH. This marker is in fact, NOT even a thyroid hormone. As its name implies, it is a hormone that stimulates the thyroid gland. In fact, TSH is a pituitary hormone, as it is NOT produced by the thyroid and, therefore, tells us little about the health of our thyroid. So why are millions of Americans being put on thyroid medications due to their abnormal level of TSH? This testing is incomplete. As Wellness Way practitioners, we use in depth thyroid panels to test many markers other than TSH, such as free T3, free T4, total T3, total T4, cortisol, T-uptake, thyroid antibodies, reverse T3, and so much more!
